The first car I ever fell in love with and obsessed over as a teenager was a Chevrolet Camaro. Visions of night cruises and smoky burnouts filled my imagination – and my parents probably spared me jail time by wisely handing me the keys to the Suburban instead of the big block Camaro. Years later, something magical happens when I’m one-on-one with a 2011 Camaro – the feelings and visions of a previous decade return. It’s no wonder this nameplate has captured the devotion of so many since its debut almost 44 years ago.
LS and LT versions of the Camaro derive forward momentum from an excellent 3.6-liter direct injection V6 that produces 312 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. A decade ago I’d be ridiculed if I raved about a V6 Camaro, but this new V6 makes 112 more horsepower than the old one, and it revs eagerly to 7000 rpm. Motor Trend clocked the 0-60 mph sprint in 5.7 seconds, and the ¼ mile in 14.3 seconds at 98.9 mph. It used to be that six-cylinder Camaro owners felt apologetic, and needed to justify their non-V8 pony cars. But such is not the case with new six-cylinder Camaros – they’re quick, efficient, and loads of fun.
